Handy cleaning rod. Terrible brush 25.05.2017
Great cleaning rod. Awful brush. By the time I got the kit in the mail, half of the bristles fell out and were in the plastic baggy with the kit. IO picked up the brush, and more bristles fell out. The bronze core was not wound tight enough to hold them in.
I think there is about 1/2" of bristles left, and more are falling out every time that brush is moved or picked up.
Would ask Brownells for a new kit, but it will be built just as bad.
So I am off to spend $10 on the brush that fits kit's cleaning rod.
M1 Garand Kit 23.02.2016
I'm rating this on the optimistic side and would really give it 3.5 stars. I wanted an authentic cleaning kit to round out the accessories on my M1 and this fits the bill. Not sure I will ever use it, though it will do the job if needed. More aesthetic than functional as far as I'm concerned and I do worry actual use would damage the bore/muzzle.
Pros are authenticity, very solid feeling, heavy gauge steel, plastic guard to protect muzzle if the rod gets away from you, M10 combination tool inclusion, and it fits well behind the buttstock door. Cons are rod sections lack concentricity (rod is bent slightly at the joints when fully assembled), fit between rod sections is not great (male-female connection points are not machined dead-center of the rod which means slight jagged edges at each junction when assembled), and the leading side of the bore brush is cut, not rounded over leaving a jagged end.
I have no doubt this would work and is as good as if not actual government issue. But there are much better tools out there and I would have concerns about bore/muzzle damage with any regular use. It's sitting in the buttstock where it will most likely remain while leaving actual field cleaning to an Otis kit.
